Millennium City: Traveler of Beauty / Traveler of Beauty in the Thousand-Year Capital (2009–2015)

Gen Iwama served as planner, producer, director, and chief supervisor for two television series based on JR Central’s “Visit Kyoto” campaign. The first series, Millennium City: Travelers of Beauty (2009–2011), and the follow-up, Travelers of Beauty in the Thousand-Year Capital (2012–2015), were broadcast over multiple seasons and explored the timeless beauty of Kyoto and Nara. Actress Chiaki Kuriyama joined the second series as the new traveler, guiding viewers through temples, shrines, and other cultural landmarks. The series examined the enduring concept of “beauty” across a millennium. Each episode concluded with live musical performances, creating a distinctive format that drew considerable attention. An original soundtrack, Traveler of Sound, was released and remains widely used in other art programming. Through these series, Iwama strengthened his ties with Kyoto and Nara and pioneered a contemporary approach to presenting classical Japanese art—ranging from Buddhist statues and paintings to rock gardens and architecture—while highlighting their enduring historical and cultural significance.
