Renaissance: Traveler Through Time and Space (2000–2004)

While at Nippon Television, Gen Iwama leveraged the network’s collaboration on the restoration of the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican to build close relationships with major Italian museums. Following the completion of the restoration, a new documentary series was launched to introduce Italian Renaissance art to a wider Japanese audience, with Iwama serving as planner, producer, director, and chief supervisor. The series, featuring some of Japan’s leading actresses—including Hiroko Yakushimaru, Yoshino Kimura, Shinobu Otake, and Yasuko Sawaguchi—explores Renaissance art across Italy. Rather than merely presenting classical paintings, the series delves into the lives of the artists—how they lived, their thoughts and struggles, and the methods behind their masterpieces. This focus on the creative and emotional processes of the artists became a pivotal influence on Iwama’s later filmmaking style. The series was later released on DVD and continues to enjoy enduring popularity.
